Help Desk Volunteers
What does a Help Desk Volunteer do?Well, you're kind of the "hub" for help.
Where?
Your "command post" will be at the Family Life Center desk.
When?
You need to be in place at least 15 minutes before each activity start time. If you volunteer for the 8:15 service, then 8:00. 9:30 service? 9:15. 11:00 service? 10:45.
What do you do?
You do a variety of things. Some weeks are sure to be very busy and others not so much. Your activities could include:
- Greeting visitors and help them find the appropriate classrooms for their children. We will make sure you have the maps and resources you need to help direct people where they want to go
- Being the keeper of the 1st Aid Kit. So if a child has a boo boo, the teacher or helper would come to you for 1st Aid supplies.
- Being the "go to person" for supplies. We do our best to stock the classrooms with standard supplies, cups, juice, and crackers each week, but sometimes there is a need for a little extra. We would make sure you knew where to locate these items, so you could find them and take them to the classroom.
- Temporarily helping a teacher in a pinch. Sometimes if a child is particularly upset, the teacher needs to be able to spend a little extra time getting him or her comfortable. While that is happening, the classroom helper volunteer might need some assistance.
- Retrieving a parent. Whether due to an upset child, a sick child, or other circumstances, sometimes a parent needs to be retrieved. Most of the time this would be done by the Preschool Ministries Director, but there may be a need for assistance. We determine the parent's location from the child's security tag. If in a Sunday School class, we go to the class and calmly ask for the parent. If the parent is in a worship service, we go to the sound booth and give them the child's security number and tell them we need the parent.
- Help locate the Preschool Ministries Director. There's only one, and sometimes a teacher needs her for something and cannot locate her immediately. You will always know her location or her cell phone number.
Qualifications:
Because the Help Desk crew will have some contact with children, we still want to make sure we have the same security checks in place as for teachers and helpers in the classroom. This just means that we would take you through the user-friendly process of our Child Protection Policy. What does this mean?
- If you are in an existing leadership position with children, you have already completed this process
- If you are a new volunteer, we need to go through a few simple steps with you. We will need you to:
- Go through a brief interview
- Give us two or more personal references, that we will verify
- Allow us to run a simple background check on you. (The information is kept confidential and remains under lock and key.)

Don't worry. Questions don't get you drafted.
