Teachers

A Sunday School teacher's value is beyond measure, and we are blessed with fantastic ones!

While we do have a variety of leadership positions in Preschool Ministries that rotate bi-weekly or monthly, we ask our Sunday School teachers to make a deeper commitment.  This is because the relationship that children form with their Sunday School teachers is just as important as the lessons they learn in church.  Children learn what they live.  When we teach them they are valuable and that Jesus loves them, they connect that relationally with that precious person teaching them.

Because we value our Sunday School teachers, we do our best to provide them with the materials they need, provide them with quality resources, and handle any issues they may have quickly.

Curriculum
We use Lifeway's Preschool Sunday School curriculum.  We find it to be Biblically sound, very age appropriate for children, and flexible enough for a variety of teachers to implement it in a way that works with their individual teaching styles.  Each week's lesson includes a Bible story, a particular Bible verse or phrase, and a life application so the children learn to see that the Bible is relevant to their lives.  This is all accomplished through Bible learning activities, or "centers" where the teachers use directed play activities to engage and teach and the children.

Resources
  • Each teacher is provided with a Leader Guide to their curriculum, an enhanced CD with music, activities and downloadable resources, and a "Leader Pack" containing all of the teaching pictures and specific teaching helps needed to use the curriculum.
  • Each preschool classroom comes with appropriate seating, blocks, homeliving toys (such as kitchen set or toy stove) and general supplies of things such as tape, glue, crayons, scissors, etc.
  • Teachers can request other supporting items from our Resource Room where we stock other items such as puzzles, manipulative toys (like lacing cards, waffle blocks, etc.), and specialty toys.  Resource Request forms are available outside the Resource Room and can be turned in as late as the Wednesday before they are needed on Sunday.  Teachers can request items as far in advance as they wish.  Teachers can also emal their requests to resourceroom@richmondhill.org.  Requested items will be delivered to the teacher's classroom for them.
  • We also have access to our Preschool playground and our Family Life Center gym when the weather does not permit outside play.

New Teacher Information
  • All new teachers will be taught how to use their curriculum.  We don't just recruit you, wish you luck, and close the door behind you!
  • Know that though we expect a high level of commitment, we know that you will go on vacations, get sick, or have emergencies from time to time.  We do have substitute teachers available and will help you with that.
  • As with any leadership position with children at First Baptist Church Richmond Hill, all teachers will be compliant with our Child Protection Policy.  If you have been a leader in any capacity in Preschool, Childrens, or Student Ministries since January of 2007, you already are.  If you are new, we'll walk you through the process.  It involves a short interview, reference checks, and a simple background check.  All information is confidential and will be kept under lock and key.
